If you follow me on Instagram or know me at all, then you know my favorite color is black. Some people don’t consider neutrals like black to be a color, but I don’t really care about some people and neither should you. It’s a huge trend right now, and for that I am SO grateful. It makes it a lot easier to find things I love, from clothes to home decor, and right now I am ALL ABOUT that black. I have a bit of a love affair with the color and always have. It just makes me feel…well…like me, if that makes sense. It oozes chic, stylish, edgy and rebellious all at once. It’s just perfect.
As you’re aware, this past year has been a transformation in both my life and my space, from small changes like styling my bedroom and vanity to larger changes like my living room makeover (almost complete!). Part of my epic living room makeover was making all parts of it a reflection of myself. I previously painted, designed and decorated with my fiance in mind, and now that we are no longer together I got to start with a blank canvas. It’s both scary and super fun! I’ve re-styled the couch, painted wall sconces and another wall, made over my entertainment center and the biggest thing: painted a wall black.
It’s a scary thing painting a wall black. It can either be really, truly amazing or an epic disaster. I have to say, though, it’s PERFECT.
What my accent wall looked like before…
The previous color I had up still worked, but it was picked out by my ex. He’s a great guy but he hated the thought of painting any part of our house black. So you could say a black accent wall was on my decorating bucket list, and I’m so happy I got to check that off!
The fun process of painting…
I got all my goodies from Ace Hardware and was stoked to do the OPI Clark Kensington Black Onyx color in a high gloss finish to match my OPI black onyx manicure.
As usual with painting anything, you have to tape off the parts you don’t want to get your paint on.
And then after…
I had gone back and forth plenty of times on the different shades of black (who knew there were so many!?) and landed on this gorgeous Black Onyx paint from Ace Hardware. I wavered back and forth on a finish and, as I chatted up my nice paint guy, I realized where I had to go with it: high gloss. Black is dramatic on its own, but high-gloss black is next level, which is just what I wanted to bring into my space. I want people to walk in and the first word out of their mouth to be, “WOW.”
So the next time you’re scared to try a paint color, I say just go for it. What’s the worst that could happen? You can always paint over it, just like I painted over the blue grey that was no longer a fit for my space or my life. Best-case scenario is that it’s the perfect color and brings you much style, happiness and joy, just the way my black accent wall brings to me.
